This month saw our first Togo wide Youth Conference led by our national pastor/missionary Pastor Joseph Akapko.  He did an excellent job organizing and taking care of everything needed for a 3 1/2 day conference.  There were about 1,000 youth signed up, so they planned on 1,200.  1,700 youth ended up showing up though.  Everybody was accommodated and seem to have been blessed by their time together.  There were many decisions for Christ and recommitments.  Pray that this conference will have a lasting impact on the young people (and adults) here. The hospital and clinic continues to be busy....

Tomorrow Cheryl takes the Master's College Team to the Agou church dedication.  This is a church that was built a few years ago by our national brothers.  But it wasn't built well, so when the walls started to crumble, it needed a lot of repairs and reconstruction.  Nobody knew where the money would come from.  But, "luck" would have it, that the new president's (of Togo) mother was born in this village.  So the president wanted to build himself a "small cottage" and his mother another "small cottage" where she could live in grand style.  And they chose land that...

Water is extremely important in the world.  Man could not live without it.    Every day we watch many Togolese arrive at our hospital to get “clean, fresh water” from the hospital well; we are reminded constantly of Jesus’s words to the woman at the well, “ ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life’” (John 4:13-14, NIV).  This “spiritual water” is free, just for the asking!  What a...

Many times we get so caught up in informing you, our prayer partners, about the medical and physical work here, that we forget to report on the spiritual work!  April has been a really “full month” spiritually!  In addition to the normal Bible Studies, prayer groups, evangelistic outreaches, April was extra special spiritually!  It started with a special Easter service of 7 churches joining together.  It was great to hear all the different church choirs and special music.  As well as special messages from the Togolese pastors.  And the fellowship before, during, and after was wonderful.  What a great...

The hospital has busy as usual.  We’ve had quite a few women come into the hospital for surgery for infertility this month with our OB/GYN friend, Dr. Gus Barkett here with a resident.  This is about his 16th or 17th year here.  He is here with his good friend, Dr. Kerry Sullivan, a radiologist who helps out on the medical side.  They always bring a great team with them that keeps us hopping and laughing!  And we always eat more chocolate pudding when Kerry is around.  It has something to do with his “payment” for his work or something...

We have just finished a wonderful four weeks working with the Christian Workers for Evangelism (CWE) Teams.  Tsavié, our church plant, now has a nice new cement/cinderblock building with a metal roof!  We have already had two services in the new church!  Pastor Gatiglo AND Paul Puleo, the President of CWE, reminded everyone at the church, that the “church” is not actually the building but the people who make up the church.  We are all the body of Christ---His Church.      The fourth week of the teams, we had the privilege of helping the CWE Medical Evangelism team.  We...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND!  We pray that you find something to be thankful for everyday of the year and not just during the holidays.  We are always thankful for our salvation in Jesus Christ!  All the other blessings  in our lives are “fringe benefits.”  We were able to celebrate Thanksgiving with our friends here in Togo, complete with turkeys, mashed potatoes, dressing, and gravy.  And we all ate too much of course.   Some of the patient stories this month for you to pray about:  A 12 year old boy arrived to our hospital with a severe, compound fracture of his...

Rainy season is hanging on a little longer here in Togo.  Usually, we are pretty much into the dry season, but this year, we are still getting rain!  Bad for the roads.  Good for the rice paddies that we are seeing more and more of here in Togo!  Cheryl is back from the U.S. after her trip to help our second daughter, Stephanie, with the birth of her first baby.   It was a little traumatic for her and her husband Scott, with the little guy (Kohen Lee Wolford) having to be in the NICU for about 6 days, but...

We arrived back to Togo safe and sound and ready to get back to the ministry here.  It was a very easy transition, since we hadn’t been gone that long.  In fact, it seemed that we’d only been gone a few days.  We had good attitudes and many plans for His ministry here.  Then we arrived at the hospital.   Within the first 15 minutes, we had 4 different people tell us that the only other full-time medical missionary on the field was leaving for an indefinite period of time.  We already knew that he and his wife were going to...

Well, we’ve already mentioned that we feel somewhat “schizophrenic” traveling from Africa to the States and back.   Now, after a 12 day road trip, we have to say that we have a newer appreciation for traveling sales men, or others, who travel so much!  We had a wonderful time traveling:  we were treated royally, had great weather, saw many friends and family, visited great supporting churches, and had safety, so we’re not complaining!  We’ve been thinking a lot about death lately.  With the earthquake and the tsunami that hit Japan and killed so many, most people who were killed had been going about their normal day to day routines and thinking that they had many more days left in their lives.  Michael’s brother, Charles, died in Feb almost 10 years after a lung transplant for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.  Even though he had a terminal illness, it is still hard to lose a family member.  And one of our missionary acquaintances with SIL, Mary Gardener, who has lived in Togo for 20 years, was...

MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS! We are praying for you and your family this holiday season. We are still trying to adapt to the cold. Even though we had 2 years in Qubec learning what cold really is, we have been in Togo for 4 winters learning what hot really is. We think that our blood has really thinned out, and we like the warmth better. We had a great Ab-Hugh family reunion (Cheryl?s side of the family) at Thanksgiving. We were only missing Christina?s husband, Christopher, as he couldn?t get off of work and Cheryl?s niece Heather and her family. Otherwise,...

October 2008 Prayer Update

Cheryl Gayle on October 30, 2008

We sure are freezing here in this cold country! It?s amazing how living in Africa for 4 years has ?thinned our blood.? And the full blown winter hasn?t even hit yet! It?s good to get back to reality from time to time we guess. We have had a wonderful month with seeing supporting churches and old friends. We?ve made some new friends. We?ve also enjoyed the privilege of Michael presenting at the Billy Graham Training Center during Prescription for Renewal. We made many medical contacts that we pray will bear some fruit with some being led to work in Togo...

September 2008 Prayer Update

Cheryl Gayle on September 26, 2008

We?re writing to you from the Outer Banks of N.C. where we have had the privilege of spending a week of vacation with some of our good friends. Even though it has been rainy, cool, and windy almost the whole week, we have had a wonderful and refreshing time. It is good to step back for a little while. We have been very saddened this month with all the tragedies that seem to be happening in the U.S. with Hurricane Ike and the financial problems. Some things one can?t help like hurricanes, but other things we as a nation need...

August 2008 Prayer Update

Cheryl Gayle on August 30, 2008

We have had a good month of travel, ministry, visitation, and setting up our home. We even enjoyed watching some of the Olympics. It is fun to be home and enjoying our culture?s normal activities. It?s easy to get spoiled by being back in the US. But our hearts are still in Togo. The Northern Outreach Project---Mango Hospital startup included---is building up steam for reaching the lost in N. Togo. Michael has been able to go to a couple of meetings in Harrisburg, PA area to work with this. The team in Togo is much occupied with the planning...

July 2008 Prayer Update

Cheryl Gayle on July 29, 2008

Today is our 30 year anniversary. As we ?reflect? on our life together, we are so thankful for how God has brought us this far. It is only by the grace of God. Our journey began in Newport News, VA where we met. Then it continued in Va. Beach where we returned to God after thinking that we could live without Him. We lived briefly in Christiansburg, VA for 18 months, and then we moved to Berkeley Springs, WV for 20 years. During this time, we learned that serving God is a 24/7 lifestyle. Not just a Sunday routine. God...

JUNE 2008 PRAYER UPDATE

Cheryl Gayle on June 25, 2008

We?ve officially started our home assignment. On leaving Togo , we got to go to Nathaniel?s high school graduation at Black Forest Academy (BFA) on June 8th. We have been so impressed with BFA. Their taking such good care of Nathaniel made it possible for us to concentrate on our work in Togo . Nathaniel is planning on attending our local university, Shepherd, for the next year. We were met at Dulles airport outside of DC on June 10th by Christina (from Chicago ), Stephanie, Scott, and Pastor George Michael. (Poor Christopher had to stay in Chicago and work.) We...

JUNE 2008

Cheryl Gayle on June 2, 2008

One of our goals during our year of home assignment is to try and find the time, and the internet connection, that will enable us to update our website!  We just don't have the time or the connection in Togo most of the time that we need.  Right now, we're in Accra, Ghana getting ready to get on the plane, and they have a great internet connection at the Guest House that we're staying at.  But, alas, we don't have enough time to do what we need to do.  So, stay tuned for our traveling schedule and more news!

MAY 2008

Michael Gayle on May 30, 2008

We are in the middle packing up our personal things and saying our goodbyes! It?s very sad that we have to leave for a year of home assignment, we?re going to miss our ministry and our friends here, but it?s also very exciting to know that we get to return to the US to share about His Work here in Togo. Thank-you so much for being part of our team to reach the lost in Togo! The hospital continues to be very busy. We have noticed an increase in AIDS again, especially with families with children. Our pediatrician, Russ Ebersole,...

APRIL 2008

Cheryl Gayle on May 6, 2008

Yes, it?s May and you?re just getting your April prayer update! We are thankful that our computer problems have been bypassed for now. First of all, Peter & Jamie Buck of Waterford Productions arrived on April 15th from the states. Cheryl had a pretty tough schedule of filming for them, and one of the first things they did on arriving was go out to the different film locations to check them out and get an idea of what to expect starting the next day. That night the port on our internet/modem blew out. (We didn?t know that that was the...

We had a very sad morning this morning. Atsou, the young man who does yardwork for us, lost his 15 year old brother last night. Atsou was home for lunch yesterday, and he said that his brother was doing well and acting normal, but he did have a wound on his left hand that hurt somewhat. When Atsou got home last night from school and work, his brother was sick. They got him to the hospital by 8pm. It looks like his brother probably had tetanus and a cerebral infection (meningitis or because of the infection in his hand is...

DECEMBER 2007

The month started out with us being invited to worship with the new church plant (that was started as a direct result of the Mobile Medical Clinics) in the village Patatoukou! What a joy to see the faithful there. This is mostly a Kabiy tribe village and church which was exciting to see. This church has been faithfully meeting on Sunday mornings for most of 2007. They would like to buy land to build a church as they are just meeting outside in somebody?s courtyard now. Please pray for the members of this church to remain faithful and steadfast in...

NOVEMBER 2007

Hello from nice, warm Togo! Before you ?envy? us too much, we do have to admit that Harmattan has started back with all of its dust, but we are still nice and toasty warm while some of our N. American friends are starting to feel the bite of winter. So we?ll just have to say ?Sorry for you,? the African phrase that is used a lot out here! Next year we?ll be feeling the bite of winter more ?deeply? as we?ll be on home assignment, and then you can feel sorry for us! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration out...

Showers of Blessings! That is the way we feel this month has progressed! We have been so blessed. First of all, our short-term visitors have been such a big help to us. And it?s been fun having Pastor Dean Woodward and Pat Finn here from Grace Bible Church in Va. Beach, and also a small team from Derwood Bible Church in Derwood, MD. It?s like having family from home. We always feel so uplifted when our church families visit us. Next it?s been big blessings to have the Briggs (Family Physician) Family arrive on the field for their first term....

SEPT 2007

Michael & Cheryl Gayle on September 29, 2007

Greetings from rainy and cool Togo! We?ve been having fairly nice weather here considering its Africa. Meaning it?s been cool for the last couple of months. In the 80?s most of the time with it even cooler at night. The problem is that N. Togo has been getting way too much rain with flooding, deaths, and displacement of people. Please pray for the flooding to stop. We?re ?soggy? here (when we walk we sink down into the wet ground) but o.k. so far. The Harmattan is just around the corner though, so we do anticipate things calming down soon. Todd...

We have been so fortified by the remembrance of you and your prayers for us this month! We can ?feel? the prayers! Thank-you so much! We couldn?t minister here without you. We have been so blessed this summer with short-term visitors who helped us to minister in the hospital and in the communities around us. We could not have made it without the help of Nathaniel home this summer. He acted as a chauffeur, guide, translator, all around help. Nathaniel is back in boarding school in Germany for his senior year. We?ve had some very tough cases over the summer....

Wow! Have the last two months flown by! The month of June started with the Cedarville nursing team. After the Cedarville nursing team left, our son Nathaniel flew in from school in Germany to work with us this summer. (PTL!) Within a few days of his arrival, we were in Accra, Ghana to pick up a youth group from Calvary Baptist Church in Michigan. We had a great time working together on the first Vacation Bible School at our church at Tsavi! We were blessed with over 600 plus children who were there! Talk about a lot of kids and...

Chers, Chers amis! (Dear, Dear friends!), The last Sunday of every month at the church plant in Tsavi, after church, the whole church (there are about 30 adults now and about 30 children) goes out into the village in groups and shares the gospel with the villagers. One never knows who you?ll encounter. This last month, the group that Cheryl was in (Michael was at the hospital on call?), stopped at the ?first place on the left where there were people when we turned down the dirt road.?? We found one woman working in her outdoor kitchen and two women...

April 2007

It is with great sadness that we heard about the happenings at VA Tech. The people who died that day had not planned to. And not in that way. ?If only? is probably being said and thought a lot these days. Our hearts go out to all the families and friends who were affected. Even though there is evil in this world (not because there is no God, but because God allows us to have a free will and free choices) good can come out of evil even thought it can be very painful. We are praying. The Togolese face...

We have been so thankful for our short-term visitors this past month.  We always are, but even more so this past month.  We have had the privilege of hosting missionaries from the home office, most notably being Dr. & Mrs. Loren Anderson.  It was such a treat to get to spend some extra time with them here on the field, especially since they were so key in so many of us getting to the field as they were in charge of pre-field ministries!  And because we had short-term help, ALL of us were able to leave the hospital to go...

JANUARY 2007

January is off to a good start.  Hopital Baptiste Biblique's first order of business was to hold a spiritual revival within the first two weeks of the new year.  The revival was on a Thursday afternoon from 2pm-5pm and on Friday afternoon/evening from 2pm until after 8pm.  The hospital chaplains were in charge of the program and the guest speakers.  It was a great time of challenge and renewal for the employees (including the missionaries!)  The theme of the revival was "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless," (Gen 17.1, NIV).  Wow!  What a great reminder for...

DECEMBER 2006

MERRY CHRISTMAS from Togo, W. Africa!  We pray that you and your family will be celebrating the true meaning of Christmas this year!  As a Christian celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, and what He means to us, Christmas should be celebrated all year long.  We pray that you will carry Christmas in your heart for eternity! We were blessed with many short-term medical doctors this last month.  First Drs. Lydia Engelhardt (OB/GYN) and Bill Rambo (GS) were here for 2 1/2 months to help give some relief to our full-time "temporary" surgeon from the Philipines, Dr. JoV.  Then Dr. Stacie...
